Carrots weren’t always the crispy, sweet, orange goodness you know today.
These root vegetables were first grown thousands of years ago and were initially purple, yellow, and white with a nutty flavor.
The orange varieties that are popular today emerged around the 16th century and have been associated with several health benefits ever since.
Carrots are high in fiber and will help you lose weight
This may come as a surprise, as carrots are not typically associated with weight loss. But in reality, carrots are high in both soluble and insoluble fiber, which makes them a perfect addition to a weight loss diet.
This is because foods rich in fiber are digested for a long time, leaving behind a feeling of satiety and reducing total calorie intake.
Contains beta-carotene, which is good for the eyes
Carrots are a powerhouse of beta-carotene, a compound that converts to vitamin A and is essential for healthy eyes.
Beta-carotene also protects the eyes from the sun and lowers the risk of cataracts and other eye problems.
In addition, yellow carrots contain lutein, a compound that helps prevent age-related vision loss, a leading cause of vision problems and blindness.
Neutralizes the effects of harmful free radicals, reduces the risk of cancer
Antioxidants play an important role in fighting the body’s free radicals, which are responsible for life-threatening diseases like cancer.
Carrots contain carotenoids and anthocyanins: two antioxidants known to reduce the risk of several cancers, including prostate and stomach cancers.
It is also believed that women with high carotenoids have a lower risk of breast cancer.
Lowers cholesterol and improves heart health
High levels of LDL and total cholesterol have been linked to several heart conditions.
The high fiber content of carrots helps reduce LDL cholesterol that builds up in the walls of arteries and blood vessels.
In addition, the potassium contained in carrots promotes blood flow to the blood vessels and thus lowers high blood pressure.
