39-year-old Sidibe made her screen debut in the 2009 film precious where she played Clareece “Precious” Jones. The role and performance earned her the Independent Spirit Award for Best Actress, followed by Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations for Best Actress. Precious was also able to win numerous awards at the film festivals in Cannes and Sundance.
Sidibe later starred in numerous films and TV shows including Tower Heist, Antebellum, Come As You Are, American Horror Story, Empire and Difficult People, to name a few. Why and how did she lose weight?
Before losing weight, Sidibe weighed 300 pounds and had type 2 diabetes. Sidibe has managed to lose a whopping 150 pounds and is known for following strict rules when it comes to her diet. This has helped her reduce the negative effects of diabetes and overcome other health issues like stress, anxiety and bulimia.
Sidibe mentioned on numerous occasions that her weight did not meet the ideal beauty standards required of a female celebrity. Things got worse when she was reminded and suggested by other industry celebrities to leave the image-conscious industry. Among those bombarding a slew of comments is radio and television personality Howard Stern, who called her “bold, black, chic, Gabourey Sidibe.” He even called Oprah Winfrey a “dirty liar.” [for] telling an enormous woman the size of a planet that she’s going to have a career,” referring to Sidibe.
Aside from the comments about her weight, the Precious Star explained that the reason for her decision to undergo weight loss was to get rid of diabetes, which had started to severely affect her physical health. In 2017, Sidibe successfully underwent laparoscopic bariatric surgery to lose a few pounds quickly. During the surgery, Sidebe’s doctor, Bradley Schwack, a bariatric surgeon, removed 80 percent of her abdominal fat, resulting in a dwindling appetite.

Unlike her childhood days when she consumed tons of soda, Sidibe has avoided ingestion entirely, replacing it with lemon and cold water, which helps her stay hydrated and flushes the toxins out of her body.

Sidibe has also ditched some of its popular favorites like pizza, fries and burgers. Instead, she’s committed to clean eating with veggies, fruit, and hummus.

Minimizing sugar consumption
Once a big fan of cupcakes and Oreos, Sidibe made it a point to reduce her consumption of processed-sugar foods after she was diagnosed with diabetes. After her weight loss, avoiding consumption of processed sugar has become her mantra.
