WINCHESTER (CBS) – William Teynor’s reading skills improve every day. As a first grader from Winchester, he attends a Catholic school and is lucky enough to have spent much of his school time personally this year. But after losing much of the kindergarten at the beginning of the pandemic, his mother Meghan Teynor worried he was behind.

“So if your child has trouble reading, they can’t count… it’s difficult to do word problems. You’re trying to learn the basics of math, you’re trying to learn the basics of reading at the same time as your kindergarten year was cut short, ”she said.

To help him catch up, Teynor signed him up with Kumon, a private tutoring service. “I think it sealed the hole well,” she said.

Manjusha Inamdar and her business partner at Kumon have been helping children at their centers in Woburn and Burlington for years, but have seen an increase in families seeking help during the pandemic.

“I think the summer will be very busy for us because a lot of children have gone back to school and find that they are behind,” said Inamdar.

There isn’t a lot of data to measure exactly how much children have lost in studying. The educators hope this year’s MCAS test will provide some answers. However, research by the Brookings Institution found that more than three-quarters of the tutoring programs they analyzed resulted in a statically significant improvement for students during the pandemic.

Megan Teynor says tutoring and the fact that William received face-to-face tutoring for most of the year made a huge difference. “If we were to zoom [It would be a] currently a completely different scenario. I would consider that we might not be ready for second grade yet. “

Many school districts are using state and federal funds to offer free summer programs that help children fill that learning gap before school starts again in the fall.
